Imagine preparing meals for 900 orphaned children using three stones, a bundle of firewood or charcoal, and a few cooking pots. Women and children are exposed to smoke and scorching heat for hours each day because this is the only means of preparing meals.
Love the Hungry is launching a new campaign to deliver high-efficiency cookstoves to the Yei Orphan Center in South Sudan. These institutional-sized stoves are developed by In-Stove – a leading manufacturer of rocket stoves utilized by humanitarian programs. In-Stove rocket stoves are safe, practical, durable, and cost-effective. Each high-performance stove provides a 90% reduction in harmful emissions and cooks twice as fast as an open fire. An integrated chimney routes all emissions outside and away from people. Each stove requires a very small amount of fuel to cook a full pot of food.

Dale Oelker (Executive Director) and John Deng Ater traveled to South Sudan to assess the impact of food-aid that’s been provided during the past 2.5 years. In partnership with A Child’s Hope International and the Anglican Church of South Sudan, four shipping containers carrying more than 1,000,000 meals have been delivered to South Sudan – a country devastated by war and political conflict. Love the Hungry has focused its efforts on assisting more than 900 orphaned children being cared for by the Anglican Church in Yei – approximately 100 miles outside of the capital city Juba. Fortified meals have also been provided to the Juba Teaching Hospital.
Rev. John Bol, a pastor responsible for the care of the orphans stated “You have improved the living standard of our children! Thank you very much for the food that you have provided.” Love the Hungry also delivered water purification supplies provided by WaterStep – a Louisville-based nonprofit dedicated to clean, safe water worldwide.
Working with local contractors, plans are being developed for a Nutrition Center and clean water initiative that will multiply the impact of Love the Hungry’s humanitarian efforts.Read More
