The massive explosion in the port of Beirut, Lebanon displaced more than 300,000 people and severely damaged infrastructure for miles. At the request of Hearts in Motion, a nonprofit organization based in NW Indiana, Love the Hungry provided 15,000 fortified Nutri-Plenty meals and 56 hand-quilted blankets. The essential items are included in a shipment of humanitarian aid being coordinated by Hearts in Motion.
The slowdown in the global economy has deepened the hunger crisis in regions already vulnerable to food insecurity. Love the Hungry is engaging small-group volunteer teams to help meet the growing demand for fortified Nutri-Plenty meals. In just 90 minutes, your team of nine volunteers can produce enough Nutri-Plenty servings to feed ninety children for an entire month! Volunteers will work in a safe, sanitized environment, with the appropriate spacing requirements. Now more than ever, hunger will not end without your help. Love the Hungry continues to monitor the recommendations provided by local health officials to determine the appropriate timeline to resume packaging sessions. Although we follow strict sanitation guidelines, we do not want to expose volunteers to any risks associated with COVID-19.
We appreciate your understanding and look forward to resuming normal operations as soon as it is appropriate.
In response to recommendations provided by local health officials, it is necessary for Love the Hungry to suspend its packaging sessions through March 31. Although we follow strict sanitation guidelines, we do not want to expose volunteers to any risks associated with COVID-19 and with the necessity for volunteers to work in close proximity to others. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to resuming normal operations as soon as it is appropriate.
Volunteers gathered at the St. Mary’s Activity Center (Aurora, IN) on Sunday, October 13 for the annual Rullman-Hunger / SE Indiana service event. Fourteen packaging lines produced 42,500 Nutri-Plenty® servings that will benefit feeding programs in Central America. More than 100 volunteers of all ages gathered at Louisville Slugger Field on Sunday, August 11th prior to the Louisville City FC soccer match – packaging 15,552 fortified Nutri-Plenty meals. The event was sponsored by the Mid-America Region Thrivent Member Network. A portion of the meals will be included in a container shipment of humanitarian aid that will benefit children in Senegal.
Love the Hungry and its global mission partners Supplies Over Seas and WaterStep will receive the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNPE) 2019 Pyramid Award for the Art of Collaboration. The award recognizes the impact on global health provided through the work of the three local nonprofits. The organizations have developed a “First Response” disaster relief package that bundles fortified meals, first aid supplies, and water purification equipment. The concept was first tested in response to severe flooding in Malawi – providing essential health components during the crisis. Together, the organizations have also delivered humanitarian aid to South Sudan and other regions.
The award is sponsored by Deming, Malone, Livesay, & Ostroff and will be presented during the October 15th CNPE Annual CHANGEMAKERS Conference.
Love the Hungry is partnering with the Mid-America Thrivent Member Network and Louisville City FC for a special Summer service project on Sunday, August 11. Since 2014, Love the Hungry has been engaged in a partnership that helps ensure basic care for more than 900 orphaned children in South Sudan. Seven shipments of humanitarian aid have provided 1.2 million fortified meals, clothing, blankets, medical and hygiene supplies, water purification equipment, school supplies and much more. With the help of Louisville-based nonprofits WaterStep and Supplies Over Seas, the impact has been multiplied even further.
Access to clean water is essential to good health. With no water source nearby, water must be purchased weekly and hauled to the site where children gather for school and a daily meal. It’s costly, and the quality of the water is very poor. With the support of many generous donors, Love the Hungry has launched a Clean Water Initiative that includes drilling of a deep borehole/well, installation of a solar-powered pumping station, construction of a water tank tower, and installation of water purification equipment (provided through WaterStep). The project will enable up to 5,000 liters of water to be purified and available for use at all times.
Additional phases for the project include construction of a kitchen/storage facility with classroom space, hand washing stations, and latrines.
